Sometimes, after glancing through news reports from around the world, I have to ask myself why one half of the human race is not secretly contemplating the extermination of the other half given the horrors the latter regularly and unremittingly inflicts on the former. Three articles from today’s British Independent newspaper may perhaps illustrate my point. First we have this:

“Captured Yazidi girls in Iraq are killing themselves to escape rape and torture at the hands of Isis militants holding them prisoner.

Hundreds of women and children were captured during the group’s bloody sweep through northern Iraq earlier this year and have since been trafficked as sex slaves , forced into marriage and imprisoned.

Victims who managed to escape told Amnesty International that many Yazidi girls killed themselves after losing hope of being saved.

A 20-year-old survivor, called Luna, said she was held with 20 girls as young…

You Won’t Pass My Class.

“You have no experience with Firewalls? What are you doing in my class?” I made an assumption when instructors are hired, they are informed of the wheel of classes students are entered into each module. At a career college, classes are every five weeks. The class you may take next module, may not be in order (pre-requisites, classes taken first) to build fundamentals of understanding. Therefore, creativity is required.

Internships. More than likely, there will be a senior student who knows exactly what you are going through. Get questions ready. I have been that desperate, spastic, and intense interrogator, eh, interviewer. “How did…What did…When did…?” The poor man was taking in my angst and hyper-vigilance. (It comes from Korean heritage. Must…not…fail. Will…shame…family.)

Study groups. The college may have a web conferencing option. Google Hangout is available. Skype each other for the one-to-one interaction. Have a plan of what should be covered to pass quizzes, tests, and get homework done. It’s too easy to be distracted. There are a variety of options to choose from to keep the meeting on course.

Go to your instructor. Let the instructor know you will be struggling. Schedule a meeting once a week. If you are more advanced in your area of study, twice a month. There are virtual offices that are setup in the portal. USE THEM.

Lab Time. If the college offers study hall, especially in IT. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY. They offer free study for IT certifications. Out-of-pocket, each study program is $149. You paid for it. Own it. Love it. Cherish it. Programs love too (Matrix Revolutions reference).

Cry, scream, pout, throw a tantrum. Get it all out. Then, when are you finished (I have done all of this last module), get up, set milestones like a project manager and get cracking. Next module is January 5th, 2015.
